Warren County Camp Giddy Up Go

Thank you Carissa, Jack, Laurel, and Devin, for your help this past Saturday at the Warren County Camp Giddy Up Go!! There were about 40 mounted 4-H members, and 12 horseless members attending. Participants worked on Horsemanship Skills, Trail obstacles, and went on a trail ride. There was also a basic jumping lesson during the lunch hour. Leaders in Warren County did a great job organizing the camp. It seemed that there was involvement from many volunteers and leaders as well!! Thank you for involving Team Horse Power in your camp!!

Warren County

Looking forward to helping tomorrow at Warren County with Jack, Carissa, and Devin. I got to help last year and had a great time.

Team Horse Power Conference Call-May 9, 2013

To those of you who were able to be on the call last evening, thank you.  I think we got some good discussion going, and some good team work starting to be developed.  Please remember that follow through on the items we discussed will be very important.

On the call last evening were Paige Henry, Cheyenne Myers, Leah Craig, Laura Keller, Lauren Androstic, Alexis Lingenfelter, Caroline Van Pelt, Maddie McEachin, Laurel Johnson, Carissa Chilcott, Felicia Martin-Borrero, Chelsea Folmar, and Devin Campbell.
Programs
Laurel told us a bit about a couple of programs she helped out with.  One was in Lawrence County, helping youth with riding skills for levels 1 and 2.  The other was a county wide clinic in Butler County.  Maddie and Carissa both rode in the clinic in Butler.  Devin was present there as well.  Coming up in Butler County is a Horsemanship Skills Driving clinic.  This is June 2nd at Storm Harbor Equestrian Center, Slippery Rock University.

Lauren helped with a district wide demonstration of Horsemanship Skills in Westmoreland County, on April 25th.  She said there was a really good participation at the clinic.

Cheyenne is preparing to help with a program in York County, called discovering Horses.  That is scheduled for May 18th.

Felicia is putting together a display for a booth at Tractor Supply, promoting the PA 4-H horse program.  She has been pulling together hand outs about the horsemanship skills program.

Laurel, Jack, Carissa, and Devin will be helping tomorrow, May 11th, in Warren County, at the Camp Giddy Up Go.  Hoping the weather cooperates.

Alexis and Laura will be spending the day tomorrow, helping Bethany with a program in Danville.

State Show Clinics

During the call, we discussed possible clinics for the state horse show round pen.

Lauren and Leah have agreed to work together on a Grooming & Showmanship session.  Lauren did this clinic last year, and had some nice audience participation.  Lauren is taking the lead on this.

Paige and Leah are going to do a Miniature Horse In Hand Trail clinic.  Paige worked on this last year with Ingrid Boarts.  The plan is to bring some mini obstacles this year, to make presentation a little more organized.  Cheyenne as agreed, if necessary, to bring additional equipment.  Paige will take the lead on this clinic.

Leah, Carissa, and Felicia are going to put together a clinic demonstrating basic rider position.  This will be walk and trot.  They will have both a hunt seat and western rider there to demonstrate.  Leah is taking lead on this, and will be contact Carissa and Felicia to discuss planning and ideas.

Educational Display
A few ideas were tossed out for this display.

Leah suggested a display promoting the “On the Road to horsemanship Skills” curriculum.  The display would encourage use of this program in county programs.

Devin suggested maybe a barn/fire safety display.  Leah said she has a breyer barn that could be used for this display.

Chelsea suggested a trail riding safety display.  This would cover safety rules, rules on the trail, setting up a safe campsite, etc.

Another thought that just occurred to me would be something promoting the next round of GPP’s (10, 11, 12)  This might be a good place to introduce the next round.  One of the planned activities is an “I Spy” activity, dealing with barn safety.  May tie nicely into Devin’s idea.

Paige mentioned a display promoting the Team Horse Power program.  I think this is great, but would like to see this as a general theme at the THP booth, by the round pen.  When you are out presenting programs, please take pictures, and keep summary sheets up to date.  These are pieces of information we can use to put this type of booth together.

Calendar
Coming up on May 18th, I have Leah and Paige coming to help me in Bedford, at the District VII camp.  If anyone else is available to help, that is a nice camp, with generally about 50 campers.  I could use a couple more helpers there.  Also, for Jefferson County on June 7th, I could use some additional help.  Paige and Alexis have already committed to this.

Facebook/Blog

Felicia will be posting on facebook next week.  Caroline is postin the week of May 20th.  Chelsea has agreed to post the week of May 27th.  Coming up in June, Alexis will post the week of June 3rd.  We will be watching for a post from Laura the week of the 10th of June.

If any of you want to be daring, and try your hand at posting on the blog, it really is very easy.  I would really appreciate seeing that someone other than myself posted there.  Take the challenge!!

Next Call
Please look at the new doodle poll, and mark dates and times that work for you, so we can set up dates for the next few calls.  Cheyenne will be conducting this call, with assistance from Bethany and myself.

Those of you with ideas for the state show clinics and display, please be ready to give a brief description of your outline for these clinics and displays.  This will help you to prepare for these.

Thank you again for your participation in the conference call last evening, and to all of you for your team work and participation in Team Horse Power activities and events!!

Clearfield County Program

This is an excerpt from Chelsea's summary report, of an event she and Fran presented to 2 clubs in Clearfield County. Their audience was 16 4-H horse club members, from 2 different clubs.
Thanks Chelsea!

"Fran and I demonstrated all of the level one horsemanship skills. I began with the handling skills using my own horse. I first asked the kids how they felt something should be done and then de...monstrated the proper way to do the skill. I covered how to catch and halter a horse in various situations, then I moved on to leading the horse and grooming skills before finishing with bridling and saddling. At this point I turned things over to Fran as the educator and I became solely a demonstrator. Fran went over what the proper maneuvers under saddle should look like and why they are important as I showed the skill she was speaking about. Most of the questions in the handling portion were on the different knots we mentioned including the quick release knot and the square knot. In the riding portion some of the kids did not understand what a check and release was. Overall I felt that the presentation went well. The kids were willing to interact with us and ask questions. Also I feel that we covered a lot of information without overwhelming the younger members which can be tricky. If I were to do this again I would have brought more ropes so that the children could have practiced tying the knots without having to share."

Upcoming Events

Watch for Team Horse Power members at some of the upcoming events across the state! There will be members helping out at the Camp Giddy Up, Go in Warren County on May 11th. Also, hoping to have members at the District VII camp in Bedford County on May 18th. If you are participating in Jefferson County on June 6th and 7th, or in Elk County on June 8th, you may see some of our team members there helping out. THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!! If you have a club or county activity that you are looking for help coordinating and running, there may be a team member who can help!

2013 Team Horse Power Annual Meeting and Training

The 2013 Team Horse Power Annual Meeting took place this past weekend, March 8-10.  In addition to the involvement of Extension educators, Donna Zang, Butler County and Kirsten Dubbs, Clinton County, there were 14 teens from 9 counties in attendance.  The meeting was hosted at Krislund Camp, in Madisonburg.  The hands on horse work was graciously hosted by the Snavely's, at their new facility nearby.  Lea Ann Kimble put together a group of demonstration handlers and riders for us.  This was greatly appreciated.

New to the format this year, the team attended the Winning Ways clinic, at the Snider Ag Arena.  this gave the team a chance to watch a top trainer while he helped riders work through a variety of trail obstacles.  His comments were also directed to the audience, giving the team some methods they can potentially put to use in clinics they are helping with.

The team participated in team building activities and initiatives in an effort to form a cohesive group.  The weekend was packed with various training activities.  Starting at 7:00 on Friday evening and commencing at 1:00 on Sunday, it would be the exception if someone said they didn't go home tired from the efforts.  I know I was ready to be home on Sunday.  Sunday morning Amy Snover, PA 4-H horse development committee member, gave of her time to work with Kirsten Dubbs, interviewing the new memb ers of the team.  Though nervous for their interviews, Amy said they all held together, and came up with some good information.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this training a huge success!  I look forward to working with all of the members of the 2013 Team Horse Power!
